Movie Review: Madame Web (2024) Minor Spoilers

I'm willing to bet a lot of people haven't seen this film, and probably will never plan to watch it.

Madame Web was poorly reviewed by critics and largely ignored by audiences. For myself, I'll only see a Sony superhero movie in cinemas if Spiderman is actually in it. For everything else I can wait until it hits a streaming service I'm subscribed to.

Sony's Spiderman/Marvel adjacent movies aren't actually terrible movies. They're not great movies either but I've never put one on and not watched it all the way to the end. I do find them watchable... just not really rewatchable.

Madame Web is an origin story for the title character (Dakota Johnson), and three other future Spider Women (that I'm not all that familiar with) who suddenly find themselves being pursued by a dark figure with very spider-like powers.

The problem with this movie, in my opinion, is the writers forgot that the main reason anyone comes to see a comic book superhero movie is to see the actual superheroes brought to life in live action.

That just doesn't happen here. You never see any of the main cast suited up and in action during the movie - except very briefly in a flash forward. The title character doesn't even know she's Madame Web for the majority of the film. I'm not even sure if she's even using the name by the end (I didn't hear anyone say the movie's title once).

Just like the movie itself, who no one was asking for, no one was asking for this origin story either. It feels like the writers should've kept this script for reference (and inclusion as possible flash backs), and then written the sequel to this as the first Madame Web movie.

The whole thing does have some cool scenes, and is actually entertaining, if a little obvious in its foreshadowing at times (when Cassie/Madame Web is not literally foreshadowing the future with her visions). It's just not a Madame Web, or a Spider Woman movie. It's the movie before any of them become their superhero selves.

Such a missed opportunity to start a really cool, female led Spider Woman series. This is one time where the writers really should've stuck to the formula and started with the main superheroes fully formed, and in the thick of the action. I'm disappointed for the main cast, who all did what they could with what little they had to work with.

No one was asking for this, so it needed to really show that it's something we didn't know we wanted until we saw it.

Movie Review: Project Hail Mary (2026) No Spoilers

T his wasn't a movie I particularly wanted to see even though it's right in my wheelhouse, realistic Sci-fi. However, after Project Hail Mary did so well in theatres it became a movie I wanted to check out once it reached streaming. In this case I watched it on Amazon Prime Video. It wasn't really on my radar because, on the surface, it's not anything I haven't seen before, even quite recently. Lone astronaut goes on some kind of mission, mission fails, astronaut tries to salvage the mission and somehow finds a way home. However, in my opinion, what makes this film different is in the detail. There are a lot of often seen tropes here presented in new ways, that may capture your imagination. The movie opens with science teacher, Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), waking up from deep sleep on a spaceship, far from Earth, with no memory of why he is there. The Lego Man - He's got all that!

Who would have thought that owning one of the worlds largest, private Lego collections could take you so far. Tom Lucieer of Angaston, South Australia, not only has met the Queen (of England) but is a frequent guest of her majesty and family when they are in Australia. He's also met Prince Charles, Lady Diana and Camila Parker-Bowles. Not only that, he grew up with TV Vet, Dr Harry, and is a friend of the Irwin family (yes, that's Steve Irwin's family). Movie Review: Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) No Spoilers

T his is the first time in quite a while we've seen a live action Spider-Man that is, essentially, a fully formed, grown up superhero, fighting crime on his own terms rather than looking to mentors to guide him. In Spider-Man: Brand New Day it's four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home . No one knows who Peter Parker is but Spider-Man has become a local legend, helping to keep New York free of crime. Personally, Peter is still struggling with not reconnecting with his former friends, whose lives are again put at risk when a new foe crosses his path. If you're a fan of Tom Holland's Spider-Man films, and the MCU in general this film should not only not disappoint, you may even consider it to be one of the best MCU films you've seen in a while. I really enjoyed all the quick cameos by small time Spider-Man villains even though I don't know many of them.
