Aptera Launch Edition Solar Powered Electric Vehicle. |
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are going to be, and in fact are, already a thing. It's already been proven that they can out perform their fuel powered counterparts with the Rimac Nevera, the fastest production car ever made.
While you might have distance anxiety about electric vehicles, it's not really any different from the anxiety you feel when the fuel gauge is on empty and you're not sure if the car will even make it to a fuel station.
The difference for EVs is that literally anywhere with a power point can be a charging station. Not a great charging station but a charging station none the less.
Thus giving rise to the anti EV snob who would have no problem letting you charge any of your mobile devices at their home but dammit, you're not plugging your car into their power grid. Not even if you throw them a few bucks for the extra power.
It's the principle of the thing. Apparently, their fuel driven car is suddenly so much better for the environment because making batteries does more damage than drilling for oil... so stop using all your other battery powered devices then, if that's your actual concern.
Yeah but they're just small batteries... sure, but how many small batteries get made per year when almost everyone in the developed world is an arm's reach away from at least one mobile device?
While the Aptera Solar Powered Electric Vehicle has been in development for at least ten years, it's finally on the verge of going into production. You can pre-order yours as I write this.
What sets it apart from other EV's is that you may never need to even plug it in to a power source.
Finally you can turn up at your anti-EV relative's house and not only tell them you don't need to plug in, you can also tell them, you almost never need to plug in. An Aptera EV can get up to 40 miles per day on solar power alone.
Immediately your anti-EV relative is going to scoff at that and say 'what if you need to go 41 miles?' and you'll say, 'dude, everywhere I drive is within ten miles of my home most days, and this thing can get up to 400 miles from a full charge... so, planning on long trips - like most people do.'
'...and, of course, not everyone is a dick like you. Some people are happy to let you charge at their house if there's no charging station close by.'
While this tent attachment looks cool I don't think the Aptera's market is the camping crowd. |
Do I think the Aptera is going to be a thing? Probably not this version. It's a very niche audience that gets excited for a three wheeled car (and this thing doesn't even fly). However, I would expect the savings to running costs, by adding solar power charging to any electric vehicle, is something we may see more of in the future.
I'd certainly be very interested in not just a car that charges by solar power but all my devices too. Sure you can get solar powered chargers but building solar charging right into the device might be something too.
