It's fair to say Marvel's Secret Invasion did not live up to what anyone was expecting.
Which is not to say it was all bad, it just didn't really deliver. Ultimately it's a series with some great moments, some great characters, and some potentially great ideas, that just didn't mesh as a whole.
The story is a continuation of events that unfolded at the end of Captain Marvel. Except it's 30 years later and Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Captain Marvel still haven't delivered on their promise to find the Skrulls a new home.
This causes a rift in the Skrull population on Earth with a plan to take over the planet being put into motion.
Overall it's a big story made small (in my opinion) with an A-list cast, that are all more than capable of compelling performances, doing the absolute best with what they were given.
As a result the main story is forgettable but, there are many memorable moments that just might be enough for a re-watch.
It really highlights the idea that people who only see Marvel movies don't need to see the TV series to follow along. It's no wonder the writers of Dr Strange and the Multi-verse of Madness admitted they never watched WandaVision before writing their script.
A particular highlight is any scene with Olivia Colman's character, Sonya Falsworth, who I guess is British Secret Intelligence of some description, and Fury's U.K. counterpart. Falsworth is a force of nature, where real power is what you bring to the table, rather than actual super powers. If nothing else, you'll want to see Colman reprise this role, as much as possible, hopefully across several films.
Also great is getting several scenes with Fury and Ben Mendelsohn's Talos exchanging their thoughts and point of view on the Skrull situation. Scenes between Fury and Rhodey (Don Cheadle) are also a highlight.
As I said there are many great moments throughout Secret Invasion. It just doesn't amount to much with the finale wrapping it all up very quickly with quite a few questions left unanswered.
Honestly, the Skrulls could've just kept doing what they were doing and it would've been a far more effective secret invasion. No one would've been any the wiser.
Secret Invasion is certainly worth the watch if you're a Marvel fan Especially if you want more Nick Fury backstory. How things pan out with future shows and movies will ultimately determine how important this series is to the larger MCU but right now, it really only moves a few pieces around on the board.
