The Blacksmith's Inn - Our Unofficial Quest to Try All the Burgers Not Made By Fast Food Chains Continues

It's been quite some time since my partner, Enigma, and I have spent a day out together. She's been recovering from knee replacement surgery that happened back in May, plus it's been Winter for the past few months here in Australia.

While we didn't go too far today, we bundled ourselves into the car, along with our dog Oscar and made the trip a few towns over for lunch at The Blacksmith's Inn, One Tree Hill, South Australia.

I'm not sure if there was a lot of choice in terms of places to eat in One Tree Hill. We didn't really do a lot of exploring but The Blacksmith's is dog friendly and has a very nice outdoor eating area that they also use to provide live music entertainment on Sunday afternoons from 2pm. Today act was JK Chillin.

I don't think either Enigma or I particularly planned to continue our unofficial quest to try all the burgers not made by Fast Food Chains, but we both zoned in on their steak burger with chips.

I must admit I didn't really pay much attention to what the menu said was on my burger, largely because they had me at 'steak' but I'm fairly certain it also had bacon, cheese, tomato, onion, and lettuce. Possibly one or two other items as well.

(Just checked their online Facebook Menu... we ordered the Blackie's Steak Burger, with everything on it I listed plus Bourbon BBQ sauce - which really added some nice flavor as I remember thinking whatever sauce they used was nice).

I thought it tasted great. Enigma thought hers was a little dry but still tasted good, Oscar loved the steak tidbits we slipped him under the table too.

We didn't spend a lot of time here to really check the place out, but when I went inside to use the restroom, I did notice the main bar was very inviting, spacious area, complete with couches as well as tables. I also got a glance into the large function room where a party lunch was definitely going on.

All in all a very nice spot for lunch or dinner (or just for drinks and/or pokies if that's more your speed).

We followed lunch with a quick trip to the nearby school oval which doubles as a recreation reserve complete with play ground, tables, BBQ, tennis courts, and dog bag dispensers. The oval is set up for various field sports with almost perfect grass.

Oscar loved being off the leash here - a little too much. I think his happy place is a big, wide open field of grass because whenever he's on an oval he just loves to run, and he's harder than usual to call back. He's still pretty fast, even with his 14ish year old back legs that sometimes give way if he turns too quickly.

After that we headed back, stopping at a local Gawler Park that we hadn't been to for quite some time to give Oscar and ourselves a bit more time in the outdoors, before heading home.

I have painted penguins before as part of my Australian Animals series from the early 2000's, and I have a couple of cartoon penguins (that you can see in a very old post, Designing Formal Penguins ) I created for a Yeti skateboard graphic, so, I didn't just randomly think, 'penguins'. You'l find my own Photography in this blog too. Quite a while back I did a survey that tells you what kind of audience credibility your blog has. I'm not sure what the score was but I do remember the commentary which boiled down to "Your mother reads your blog regularly but you probably don't have much wider appeal". Fuck you survey! Movie Review: Project Hail Mary (2026) No Spoilers

T his wasn't a movie I particularly wanted to see even though it's right in my wheelhouse, realistic Sci-fi. However, after Project Hail Mary did so well in theatres it became a movie I wanted to check out once it reached streaming. In this case I watched it on Amazon Prime Video. It wasn't really on my radar because, on the surface, it's not anything I haven't seen before, even quite recently. Lone astronaut goes on some kind of mission, mission fails, astronaut tries to salvage the mission and somehow finds a way home. However, in my opinion, what makes this film different is in the detail. There are a lot of often seen tropes here presented in new ways, that may capture your imagination. The movie opens with science teacher, Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), waking up from deep sleep on a spaceship, far from Earth, with no memory of why he is there. The Lego Man - He's got all that!

Who would have thought that owning one of the worlds largest, private Lego collections could take you so far. Tom Lucieer of Angaston, South Australia, not only has met the Queen (of England) but is a frequent guest of her majesty and family when they are in Australia. He's also met Prince Charles, Lady Diana and Camila Parker-Bowles. Not only that, he grew up with TV Vet, Dr Harry, and is a friend of the Irwin family (yes, that's Steve Irwin's family). Movie Review: Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) No Spoilers

T his is the first time in quite a while we've seen a live action Spider-Man that is, essentially, a fully formed, grown up superhero, fighting crime on his own terms rather than looking to mentors to guide him. In Spider-Man: Brand New Day it's four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home . No one knows who Peter Parker is but Spider-Man has become a local legend, helping to keep New York free of crime. Personally, Peter is still struggling with not reconnecting with his former friends, whose lives are again put at risk when a new foe crosses his path. If you're a fan of Tom Holland's Spider-Man films, and the MCU in general this film should not only not disappoint, you may even consider it to be one of the best MCU films you've seen in a while. I really enjoyed all the quick cameos by small time Spider-Man villains even though I don't know many of them.
