"Ashton Kutcher as Superman" AI Image by picfinder.ai |
I recently watched Ashton Kutcher and Reese Witherspoon's latest Netflix original movie, Your Place or Mine and, while the movie was entertaining enough, all I could think about is that Ashton Kutcher is at the point in his career where he could probably play a really great, modern take on a Chris Reeve style Superman.
Which seems outlandish and left field but back in the day Ashton actually screen tested for the role in the ill fated Superman Flyby, and then turned it down because it didn't feel right (after trying on the Superman suit).
Ashton is mostly known for playing comedic roles with a kind of naïve goofiness but weirdly he looks very comfortable playing super rich millionaire types. Possibly a bit of art imitating his real life where he's made some very smart business investments and career choices.
Case in point is this latest film, Your Place or Mine, where Ashton plays a highly intelligent and successful business man/playboy type that would not be out of place as a modern interpretation of Batman's Bruce Wayne.
At the same time he's got that innocence and somewhat idealistic quality that would also play well for a modern take on Chris Reeve's Clark Kent. Not to mention that he's got a very Superman like profile these days physically.
Ashton is also no stranger to playing the action hero either. While 2010's Killers was still a comedy it definitely showed he could play the confident and self assured hero too.
At this point Ashton is likely too old for whatever James Gunn has planned with his upcoming Superman: Legacy film, saying it would feature a younger Superman (you may as well keep Henry Cavill who is several years younger than Ashton).
However, maybe Kutcher could be in one of DC's Else Worlds movies.
Given Michael Keaton, aged in his seventies, got the opportunity to come back as Batman in The Flash movie there's still plenty of time for Ashton.
I never thought I'd even be thinking this, but I kind of want to see what Ashton Kutcher could do as Superman. He may surprise as all and be the next Michael Keaton style Superman (i.e. comedic actor turned DC, A list superhero) that everyone likes.
