Keep Calm and Listen to The Australian Prime Minister Rocking the Ukulele with Dragon's April Sun in Cuba
Based on a still from Australian 60 Minutes Interview, our Prime Minister and his ukulele. |
Say what you will about Australia's current Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, but there are now two things I'll remember him for. The first is stopping the revolving door of leadership change in the nation's top job. I'm hoping he's not going to be so good at that as to win the upcoming election this year.
The other is, he can play the ukulele...
...and, while everyone up to Gen X might think that's a really hokey, 'Dad' trait, ukulele's are actually very popular with the younger demographic because they're extremely affordable, portable, and not too difficult to learn. Just do a search on YouTube.
Whether you thought he played Dragon's 'April Sun in Cuba' well or not (or you're a member of the band Dragon whinging that he played it all), all I know is he can play it better than me. Not that I've tried, but I've been learning the ukulele for a while and still can't play a single song the whole way through... and if I try to sing as well... forget about it.
I'm busy though. I clearly don't have nearly as much free time as a world leader to practice the ukulele.
Anyway, if you still associate the ukulele with Tiny Tim and his hit Tip Toe Through the Tulips below is YouTuber and ukulele player, Elise Ecklund, playing a mix of 22 contemporary songs on the ukulele with just four common chords. Given she has over 2 million subscribers and a big part of her channel's focus is her ukulele music... I'd say ukulele's are very much in with younger people (old enough to vote).
So, maybe Scott Morison's daughters may not have been cringing quite so much at their dad attempting to play a contemporary song on an instrument that is very much back in fashion.
