Then I had an epiphany based on something Aaron Kyro had said about why he placed heelflips before kickflips when he made Skateboarding Made Simple. His reasoning was that heelflips were most like ollies. Up until recently I didn't see how that was possible but he's actually right.
I was thinking about that and thought, what if I just set my feet up on the deck, as you would for a heelflip, then just do the exact same actions as if I was doing an ollie? Within a couple of tries I had the deck flipping a full rotation - mind blown (well maybe, not but for me it was a big progression in learning the trick).
I still haven't landed heelflips yet but much of that is down to my timing (sometimes I start flicking before I've even popped my ollie), and me just not committing to the landing.
Watch my video below where you can see my many attempts to land a heelflip in glorious slow motion. Whilst you're doing that you can watch me create my latest piece of skate art illustration that you can purchase on a skateboard or some other item of clothing in my RedBubble store. It's also available on Long Sleeve T-Shirts in a range of colors in my Amazon Store.
