Man Eating Koalas Right Where I Live!

Not the actual Koala.

When I take our dogs for a walk it's not enough that I have to watch out for snakes, lizards, prickles and other over enthusiastic dogs but now I also have to watch out for man eating koalas too!

Well alright more like woman biting koalas but this happened right in the suburb where I live, and possibly where I walk my own dogs. Who would ever suspect a largely vegan koala would go rogue for a pound of leg flesh!

The story goes, according to Mama Mia, a Willaston woman, Mary Ann, was walking her dogs in bushland. Distracted by texting on her mobile phone she did not notice herself getting too close to a wild koala, which promptly attacked her leg and would not let go (see the photo of Mary Ann's injury below just prior to having 12 stitches and being placed on IV antibiotics for four days).

Mary Ann told ABC Radio “I had to put my fingers in its mouth and prise open its jaws to get my leg out."

Clearly it was the last straw for the koala. Maybe it was one of those "Get off my lawn!" moments where you just snap? Or maybe koala's don't like people absorbed by their phones either... "Hey! Nature! Look up and enjoy it... F***ing wild kola right here! You don't see that very often in Willaston!"

I've lived all around Gawler for the past 14 years, the last four in Willaston and I've never seen a koala whilst walking my dogs. Seriously, if you're missing that experience because of your phone, nature should bite you for not paying attention!

Especially as, over that period of 14 years, I've seen numerous venomous snakes in drive ways and nearly ridden over a few on bike trails. Mary Ann was lucky it wasn't one of those she didn't notice.

To those of you that only know koala's as cute, cuddly and docile creatures (which is just about everyone) it's a bit of a shock to think one could actually be attacked by a koala.

For some reason, to me, it has a freaky air of those metal toothed dolls in the sexy, 1968 sci-fi classic Barbarella, staring Jane Fonda. They're not particularly scary until they start gnawing on your leg! Remember that the next time you see a koala in the wild.

TV Series Review: Velma (2023-2024) No Spoilers

A s a kid, Scooby Doo cartoons were something I used to watch fairly regularly. I wasn't a diehard fan but it was one of the better, of the many, cartoons I used to watch. TV Series Review: The Office - Australia (Prime Video) (2024) No Spoilers

W hile I'm a late comer fan of The Office, only watching after the original and USA versions were both available on streaming services, I did watch them in the order of release i.e. I watched the U.K. version first. Movie Review: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) No Spoilers

I f you're like me and didn't go to see Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in theatres you made the right choice. For context, I loved the first Aquaman movie . It's one of my favorites from the Snyder/DCEU era. It is a relatively well made adventure story, with some fantastic world building, amazing visuals, and included some commentary on environmental issues as well. D iscombobulated. Is a word that I think someone rediscovered about three or four years ago (maybe more because the pandemic years have thrown out my sense of time) and now I hear it a lot.
