Another Visit to Semaphore Beach South Australia

Semaphore Beach is a favorite haunt of my partner and I. Oscar also loves it too. He's not a big fan of the water but he's not really scared of it either. With a bit of encouragement you can even get him to swim. He likes all the people and seeing other dogs.

I've written about Semaphore Beach before. It's a great family beach with plenty to do even for non swimmers like myself. You can see the main part of the foreshore in the image above. This area has playgrounds, a skate park, cafe, fairground, waterslides and even a miniature train that runs at least half the length of the foreshore.

Semaphore is about 45 minutes to an hour away from where we live in Gawler. Part of the reason for going was to give my Frog Van its first long distance run since getting it up and running and back on the road.

Obviously we made it there and back with no issues and not a single backfire from the van's engine. It happily flew along at the maximum speed limits for the fastest sections of the trip (110 kilometres per hour). It's a little hairy going at that speed in the van because it's so light and the roof vibrates a little too but otherwise it's okay.

If you're ever down Semaphore way and planning to get a serving of fish and chips for lunch or dinner, although the Cafe/Ice cream shop on the foreshore is a good option, we prefer heading up the main street to Soto's Fish and Chip shop (be warned they don't have EFTPOS).

In general Soto's food is just better quality and they cook all their chips fresh. Though we seemed to get a lot of scrappy little chips in our order but otherwise the fish and Calamari we ordered was very nice.

We ate ours on the grassed median strip that runs down the main street and features park benches and shady trees making it very pleasant despite the traffic running past either side.

There's not too much else to add. We enjoyed our day. The weather was great, with not a cloud in the sky and a breeze to keep the heat cool. Feel free to watch the very short video below for a few more images from our day.

    Oh, I thought I was going to see actual video, as I wanted to see some more of Oscar! Would be nice to see some of Kathy too - and you of course as well, though Kathy would have to do the honours for that maybe.

    I'm sure I must have been to Semaphore beach in the long, distant past when we all lived over there, but it will have changed since the 70s, so I can't remember it. Looks a nice place to go, even if it is a long drive, but nice for a day or afternoon out.

    Don't suppose your van runs to air con when the real heat is here? Still, fresh warm air's not too bad, that was all we had then. Which is your nearest beach - though - I don't think you are too far away from it in Gawler? Are the beaches nice there - I've never been to Gawler?

    I forget we've got beaches in Perth, as I very rarely get to go there, and it would probably be just Fremantle if I did. I haven't been for quite a few years now, and the time before that it had been 6yrs since I'd been to a beach!

      I was going to do some video of the trip but it starts to feel a bit like work trying to get some interesting footage. Just wanted to have a nice afternoon, and take a few photos for the blog.

      Kathy prefers not to be filmed so don't expect to see her in a video any time soon.

      The van has windows for air con - and a fan. That's about it. I've never really found it that hot to drive in, even on hotter days.

      Semaphore, I think, is our nearest beach for swimming. I think St. Kilda might be the closest but it's more of a playground near a beach that people use for boating and fishing.

    Indeed the beach is built to guarantee your safety while providing you with a perfect way to enjoy its unspoilt beauty. Bondi beach features some of the finest hotels and restaurants in this part of the world.

I'm Confused About Why People Prefer to Say Discombobulated?

D iscombobulated. Is a word that I think someone rediscovered about three or four years ago (maybe more because the pandemic years have thrown out my sense of time) and now I hear it a lot. It's not a new word by any means, but when I started hearing multiple celebrities using it in everyday sentences, I actively had to look up what it meant. Social Media: It's All Fake News - Even That News You Shared, That Proves the Thing, Because It's Backed Up By a Credible Expert, is Fake.

Social Media profiles need a peer based rating system that locks you out for 30 days if your feed is one long stream of depressing boredom that bums everyone out. I  don't watch or read the news anymore (mainstream or otherwise). From time to time, if something filters through that piques my interest, I'll take a bit of a dive to find out more. The recent US election is a good example. I even wrote a few opinion pieces in this blog. The Daily Show Is Not News Note that I don't count The Daily Show as news, because I did watch quite a lot of that during the US election. While they lean quite a bit toward the left overall, it's not a show you look to for context, since much of their humor is based on reframing context to get a laugh. The one thing The Daily Show does well is highlight how both Liberal and Right wing media latch onto one or two bullet point messages each day and run them through the mouths of every on screen commentator like they're all wind up parro...

Movie Review: The Fall Guy (2024) *Minor Spoilers*

W hen I initially heard they were making a movie version of the TV series, The Fall Guy (1981-86) , I was definitely interested, as a person who tuned in to that series, weekly, when it originally aired. I had intended to see The Fall Guy in the cinema but, for whatever reason, didn't get there, and didn't prioritize seeing the film as the reviews, and more importantly, general information about the movie came out. Specifically, The Fall Guy makes no effort to capture whatever magic it was the TV show had that made it the show it was. A fact that is driven home by the reworked TV series theme song, played over the end credits and behind the scenes footage of stunts in the film, that removes all references to real world actors and replaces iconic line of "I'm the unknown stuntman who made Redford such a star" with the nonsensical "I'm the unknown stuntman who tries to win your heart." - sure... I guess... I mean, the original song is about never gett...

Introducing Resident Dragon: The Trials and Tribulations of Living in a Shared House with a Dragon in the Suburbs

TV Series Review: The Penguin (2024) *No Spoilers*

W hile we wait for an eternity (well an eternity in movie fan years anyway) for The Batman Part 2 , sequel to Matt Reeves acclaimed, The Batman  (2022), we have, what is essentially a direct sequel with  The Penguin , a limited. eight episode, TV Series set within a week or two of the end of the first film. Unfortunately it's a direct sequel to Colin Farrell's Penguin rather than Robert Pattinson's, Bruce Wayne/Batman. Fortunately that's the only real disappointment I have with this series.   Right from the first episode The Penguin establishes itself as a show for grown ups who enjoy actual character development, that hooks you in, is thought provoking, and raises questions that you expect will be answered as the story unfolds. After the events of The Batman, there is something of a power vacuum left in Gotham's crime world that Oswald 'Oz' Cobb a.k.a. Movie Opinion: Love Actually (2003) Actually has Aged Just As It Should

S creen Rant ran an article by Bisma Fida , Love Actually: The 8 Storylines That Aged Badly, Ranked  (Published Dec 10, 2021), which obviously was regurgitated into one of my newsfeeds because  Love Actually (2003) is still one of the best Christmas movies ever made, that's why it's still topical in 2024. Bisma, who completely failed to get their profile page pro-nouns in order. Something that should be a priority for anyone commenting on what is accepted by modern audiences, who are all completely comfortable accepting preferred pro-nouns without question, because we're just that enlightened in 2024. Movie Review: Memory (2023)

S omething a little different for me in terms of movies I usually review,  Memory  is a film I was invited along to see by my partner, and both of us didn't know much about the movie going in, other than it was a film where one of the leads has dementia. The basic premise follows adult, special needs social worker, Sylvia (Jessica Chastain), who leads a simple and structured life. When Saul (Peter Sarsgaard) follows her home from their high school reunion the surprise encounter profoundly impacts both of their lives. The film starts out very awkward and disjointed to some degree, which I feel is intentional, to reflect that Sylvia, who is also a struggling single mother, is fairly resilient, she is, in many ways, just barely holding everything together because she doesn't have any other option. When Saul sees Sylvia at their high school reunion it seems like some unpleasant memories from her past are fast tracked into the forefront of her life, and things move forward fro...
