In this world there are generally two types of people, 'morning' or 'night' people. I fall into the former because I've learned that in order to be productive an early start is essential. Which is not to suggest that I get up at the crack of sunrise and get straight into my day.
In fact I get up at the slightly more respectable time of 8:30am because then I avoid my partner and the kids getting ready for work and school. I like to relax into my day with an unhurried breakfast followed by an equally unhurried shower. My actual productive day starts around 10am.
Night people bemoan the very idea of getting up at 8:30am even though this would be considered sleeping in by die hard morning people who wake up with the sun. Night people generally start to stir at around 10:00am - at least the 'early risers' of night people do.
I've noticed that night people are some what less productive than morning people in how they organise their day. Generally they seem to be always a little behind in what they wanted to achieve before the end of their day. Not that I'm trying to imply morning people always keep their schedules either but I think morning people generally try to cram more tasks into their day.
Night people think they can't be morning people because they feel like crap when they have gotten out of bed early. However the reason they feel this way is because they probably went to bed in the wee small hours of the morning. They're night people after all.
To become a morning person you have to think like a morning person and train yourself to go to bed at a suitable time. Most people need about 8 hours sleep so going to bed at around 11pm should give you a good start at 8am (yes I know that's nine hours but getting up at 7am is really not necessary unless you are employed by someone who expects you to be at work at 9am).
It takes a bit of practice to become a morning person. On the other hand to become a night person is some what easier. Morning people can always find something more to do in a day. A bit of a caffine fix will keep a morning person going. Before you know it you can easily be going to bed in the early hours of the following day.

I just found this entry really odd!! You're a morning person?? By 7.30 am I've ran for 45 minutes on the tready, had a shower and washed and blowdried my hair, applied makeup, packed 2 school lunches, fed the dogs and cat and am waking the kids...Describe your normal sunrise and then and only then I let you into the very secretive club of 'Morning people'.

ReplyDeleteI never said I was a 'Super early morning' person, though I used to be. I used to get up at 6am and walk for an hour straight then do another hour of weights. Then I'd have a shower and be sitting down to breakfast at 8:30am.

Regardless my comparison is based on 'Night People' who tend to sleep in until noon. That still makes me a morning person in my book.
I am a 'Night Person' but I don't sleep in 'til noon, so maybe this doesn't make me a true 'night person' either! I just thought I was, because I don't generally put my light out until around 3am, as I don't move off to bed until most times after 1am or later. If my light is out by midnight or 1am, that is an 'early night' for me!
ReplyDeleteI sit up in bed doing a crossword from my crossword book or the newspaper, and listen to the late-night talkback radio, which is like being part of a family, as you get to know the people's voices who ring most nights, and it's the next best thing to having 'company'.
However, I set my radio clock for 9am if I don't have to be up to go anywhere, as I don't want to sleep in 'til noon, even though I feel like I could! I set the clock to keep me motivated, as with living on my own, I am at home for quite a few days sometimes, so don't want to get too slack!
It does mean however, that I have very late breakfasts (almost lunch time)and late lunches around 2-3pm, and late tea or dinner, if you prefer at anytime from 7pm onwards most times - especially if I am on the computer!
I don't have to get up for work, but I can get up when I have to, but some elderly people go to bed at 9-30pm and get up at around 5 or 5-30am even in winter when it is dark in the bedroom - like getting up in the middle of the night to me!
Real morning people are a pain, if they don't really have to get up - but I would love to be one - well from about 7-8am anyway! I'm working on getting up at 8-830am, but must re-organise my night and daytimes first, or it doesn't work! Sorry for length, but it takes some going into - been going to answer this for awhile, and was prompted by the last person's comment!
POSTSCRIPT....Yes, after all that, I have a postscript too! Morning people (the real early risers with nowhere to go and nothing to do!) bug me when they say, " Oh, I can't stay in bed once I'm awake, I have to get up!" Bulldust!
ReplyDeleteI often wake up at 5am or am still awake at 4 or 5am if I can't sleep, but I like to 'doze'. I never feel wide awake when I get up, I always feel I could stay in bed, probably with the hours I keep. (I've been a night person from a child, even when the family was small, I still didn't go to bed early, but should have done!)
People that 'can't stay in bed' shouldn't go to bed so bloomin' early, then they might be able to, and most wouldn't complain about it being a 'long day' or being bored, but most of the elderly I know have full diaries, except the ones who can't get out because of being lame etc.
I don't usually get much more than 6hrs sleep, sometimes 5hrs, but still get up if I have to or 10am at the latest, if I have to have a bit of a 'lie in' from still being awake. (it's after midnight now when I'm on this comp, and I'm going out to lunch tomorrow up in Perth. Don't have to be at train station 'til 11-30am)...Long postscipt...I know!
I guess there are exceptions to every theory but I reckon you're still bordering on being a night person. Getting up at 9am is kind of late for a morning person (even my 8:30ish is late for a morning person but I don't stay up late enough to be a night person). I'd be positively struggling to keep my eyes open long before 3am.
